The Color Sort Challenge
A simple organizing task that appeals to pattern-seeking brains.
Why it works
Sorting is the *perfect* ND-brain activity. It's pattern recognition + categorization + completion, which lights up the same parts of the brain that love organizing closets or color-coding spreadsheets. For neurodivergent kids especially, this can feel deeply regulating.
What you need
- A bin of small, sortable objects (pom-poms, buttons, blocks, beads, dry pasta)
- 5–6 small bowls or containers
- Optional: tweezers or tongs for added fine-motor challenge
Setting it up
- 1Dump the bin on a tray or table.
- 2Set out the bowls in a row.
- 3Say: 'Each color goes in its own bowl. Take your time.'
- 4Walk away.
Tips
- Bonus: when they're done, ask them to dump it back and re-sort by *size* instead. Doubles the activity time.
- Mason jar lids work as cheap sorting bowls.
