The Floor Is Lava (Pillow Version)

Burn energy without running or screaming.

Why it works

Sometimes a kid's body needs movement before their brain will settle. Floor-is-lava channels that into a *contained* obstacle course — physical, but limited to one room. They have to think about every step (no flailing), and the rules of the game keep things from escalating into chaos. Bonus: when the lava 'cools' (i.e., they're tired), they tend to flop on a pillow and rest.

What you need

  • Sofa cushions, throw pillows, blankets
  • One open room with carpet or a rug

Setting it up

  1. 1Lay cushions and pillows in a loose path around the room. Leave gaps that require small jumps.
  2. 2Tell them: 'The floor is lava. You can only step on pillows. If you touch the floor, you have to start over.'
  3. 3Give them a 'mission' — get from the couch to the kitchen, or grab a specific toy from a corner.
  4. 4Set a timer or just let it run its course.

Tips

  • For two kids: make it a race or a cooperation mission.
  • End the game intentionally with a rule like 'last cushion is base — flop on it and the lava is gone.' That signals it's over and they can settle.

If it stops working

  • Escalate by adding a 'new island' partway through — moves the path around without restarting.
  • Add a small prize at the end (a single Skittle, a sticker) for finishing the course.
